What Makes Porcelain Veneers Special?

Porcelain is a strong, slightly translucent material that closely resembles the appearance of your natural tooth enamel. Veneers look so natural, in fact, that people won’t notice you’ve had any work done – they will just notice your beautiful smile!

Since veneers have a smooth, glass-like finish, they are also resistant to staining and attracting bacteria that can harm your teeth.

What Problems Can Porcelain Veneers Fix?

One of the great things about porcelain veneers is that they are so versatile. They are an excellent choice for correcting cosmetic dental flaws.

Veneers look completely natural and can fix a number of problems, including:

  • Changing the shape of uneven teeth
  • Covering chips and cracks in teeth
  • Concealing gaps between your teeth
  • Correcting the appearance of slightly misaligned teeth

How Are Porcelain Veneers Applied?

Before we proceed with any treatment, it’s important for you to have a dental exam. We need to make sure your teeth are healthy so we can decide if porcelain veneers are the best choice for you. We will discuss your expectations so that we can make sure you get exactly the results you desire.

Once we decide that porcelain veneers are right for you, we start by removing a very small bit of tooth enamel so the veneers will fit your teeth perfectly. Then we take x-rays and impressions and help you choose the right shade for your finished veneers. The impressions are sent to a dental lab where your veneers are custom made according to our exact specifications.

When your veneers are finished, you can return to our office and we will bond the veneers securely to the front surface of your teeth. Once they are in place, we polish and shape them to perfection. With regular dental visits and proper care, your veneers will keep your smile beautiful for many years.

About Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are considered to be a permanent restoration since they are bonded to the surface of your teeth. They are made of porcelain, a very strong material, so it is rare for them to chip or fall off. In the unlikely event that this does happen, however, the veneer can be repaired and bonded back in place.

It is not possible to change the shade of any restorative dental material with teeth whitening. If you are interested in having your natural teeth whitened, this should be done before veneers are placed. Your veneers can then be matched to the shade of your whitened teeth.

Porcelain veneers have been known to last anywhere from several years to decades. Porcelain veneers are very strong and durable, but how long they last really depends on how well you take care of your teeth and your oral health in general. Proper oral hygiene plays a very important role in the longevity of your dental veneers. In general, though, you will get the most out of your veneers if you treat them with the same care as your natural teeth.
